OUR TREE STUMP GRINDING SERVICE

A professional, reliable, hassle-free service

When you need to remove a tree stump, there are two options: dig it out or stump grinding. In the majority of cases we would recommend stump grinding. It is the less intrusive, more efficient and, in most cases, sufficient for whatever you are looking to do next as stumps can be ground to well below ground level.  You can read more about the different ways to remove a stump in our blog.

We specialise in tree stump grinding for both domestic and commercial customers.  We have a range of stump grinders meaning we can access most areas and grind any size tree stump well below ground level. Our tree stump grinder services cover much of South Devon including Torbay, Teignbridge, Exeter, Plymouth and the surrounding areas. The Tree Man provides a fast, friendly and reliable service to get the job done

WHAT IS STUMP GRINDING?

a stump grinding machine in action grinding a stump

Stump grinders have a high speed rotating front  wheel with teeth that chip away and cut further into the stump and roots until all that is left is wood chip and mud. Stump grinders vary in size and so the machine used will depend on the size of the stump in question and the access to it.  Stump grinders typically grind to a depth of up to 20 inches below ground level depending on the machine utilized, access, and other limiting factors.

TREE STUMP REMOVAL COST

We know sometimes you just want a rough idea of what the tree stump removal cost might be and it can be hard to find some actual numbers without handing over all your details first.  The truth is, it can vary a lot depending on things such as the number of tree stumps, the stump diameter and the access.  Also, what some people might consider to be a large stump, might not be quite so big for us, and vice versa. Whether you are having other tree work carried out at the same time can also have a huge impact on the stump grinding cost, making it considerably cheaper versus doing it as a standalone job.

That said, as a very rough guide, our tree stump grinding cost tends to be between £90 for small diameter stumps to £450 for large diameter stumps, this includes waste removal.  It is important to remember that we don't necessarily charge per stump either, for example several small diameter stumps might cost roughly the same as one stump as a large part of the cost can be just getting the team and machinery to site.

Considering hiring a stump grinder and doing it yourself?

In some cases it may be cheaper, however there are some watch outs.  For comparison, one day rates are typically advertised as around £95+VAT, however there are usually mandatory add ons for petrol and blade wear and tear, which amount to £25+VAT.  It is worth bearing in mind the power of the machinery you are hiring relative to the size stump you are tackling; they tend to be suitable for small to medium sized stumps, not large.  Lastly, delivery is usually not included, which can add another £30+VAT to the cost unless you pick up and return before the store closes. You might also need to add a damage waiver. In total, a one day hire is often between £160-£200 depending on delivery, not forgetting you then need to grind it yourself.

TREE STUMP GRINDING FAQs

  • How is the tree stump removed?

The Tree Man has a range of machines that will grind the stump. Stump grinders have a high speed rotating front  wheel with teeth that chip away and cut further into the stump and roots until all that is left is wood chip and mud.

  • Are the tree roots removed?

Accessible surface roots can be ground out, however be sure to let us know about these and the extent of the spread at the point of quotation. If the tree was large some of the roots may remain spread underground, however they won’t be visible or problematic and will eventually decay.

  • What happens to the grinding waste once the tree stump has been removed?

Unlike most other stump removal companies, our quotes always include waste removal.

  • Is the  quote fixed?

We follow up all estimates with a visit to fix the price.  Where quotes are provided without a visit the price will be based on their size, number and accessibility. Assuming all information is accurate the resulting quote will be fixed.

  • Do I need to be home when you grind the stump?

No. We often remove stumps when customers are not present (although we completely understand if you would prefer to be there). Once the job is complete we will email the invoice across to you.

  • How soon can you remove my stump?

We try to be as flexible as possible at The Tree Man and typically aim to complete the job within two. If you have a small stump, it might take a little longer until we have another job in the area - this way we can keep our costs as low as possible for everyone.
